SP-97 less performance than SLK-900

I think that in a cooler this size and shape the heatpipes were just for marketing. They restrict airflow more that just the regular fins.

good point, but what about the other reviews?
 
I haven't seen to many but I think that most if not all would agree with this. Heatpipes really don't do much at lower temperatures period and in a cooler tha puses air across them at a solid surface I cannot see them doing anything. Heatpipes are most effective when moving heat from one piece of metal to another not inside a single piece.

Well they have to do something because all the other reviews I look at show the sp94/97 outperform the 900s
 
The heatpipes do work but there are other factors like like the arangement of the pipes (some sites showed they work better pointing down) alsos the smoothness of the base as well as the aplication of thermal compound can also affect mounting. Also I would think that some minimum amount of heat is needed for the pipes to be usefull but I am not sure. I havent tried one of these myself so I don't know but all reviews I have seen show good results for the heatpipe heatsinks and I don't dought them.
 
ok i guess i spoke too generally. It does depend on heat. Heatpipes perform with at least 50C temperatures. In overcloking situations this does apply. However below 50C they are just blocking air. generally. There are also two types of heatpipes. some heatpipes contain air while others contain inert gasses and some very very high performance ones for extremely high temperatures contain a liquid or in one case i have seen contained mercury.
 
I have the SP-97 with a 92mm Panaflo H1A on a 2600+ Barton runnin at 2.2GHz and I get 45C at full load. Not sure how that stacks up against the 900 series, but it works for me.
 
I have an 800A that at stok woltage with a 2500+ at 3200+ would run at 32 dile and 36-7 prime95. My case temps are in the area of 28-30 though. At full idle the cpu is about a degree over the case temps. I have a 92 exhaust at the top, and 80 exhaust in standard rear position and a 120mm intake in the front.

me too, but i had a 80mm panaflo h1. my highest temp was 42 load. i guess alot depends on case ventilation
