I did not get much response from my last post. So, I will try again. The SY-P4I Fire Dragon by SOYO is the mobo I think I will chose. I would appreciate any input from you as to your likes, dislikes, and things I should be careful of concerning the mobo. Thanks for your help.

My friend is getting one with a P4 2.4 NW.
He wants to shoot for 3GHz with it.. Have to see that..
Seems like an o.k. mobo.

Thanks for the comment. Can you rephrase that in junior member language?

Yes, my friend is getting the same motherboard. (He should have it now)
The cpu he is getting for it is a 2.4 Gigahertz Pentium 4 NorthWood.
He wants to try and overclock the cpu to 3 Gigahertz. I have my doubts
Seems like an o.k. motherboard.

the motherboard is good. if you want firewire, then go with this one otherwise i would save my $50 for the Giga-byte GA-8IRXP. I went with the 8IRXP board.

i had reduced my choice the the following boards:

MSI 845 Ultra
Soyo P4I Fire Dragon
Giga-Byte GA-8IRXP
Asus P4266

decided to go with the Giga-byte b/c it has all the features you want, except for the firewire. also this is the board that toms hardware went with for shooting for 3 Ghz. so if you can get this board to work, it will be rock solid and excellent overclocker.....but there are some complaints about the reboot issue with this board....will see how that will go.

if you want IEEE and Raid, then go with the Soyo, dont know how well it will overclock but if you dont want IEEE, save yourself $50 and go with Giga-byte or Asus.

I want the firewire and RAID. It also comes with a smart card reader that I am interested in. The thing that scares me the most is that this is my first build and if I fry the mobo, my wife will KILL me. Also, I am not interested in overclocking at this time. I would just like to build a good guality PC. Thanks guys for your info.

I have the FireDragon and i love it. I have a 1.8 in it that is clocked to 2.3 so far. I am new to overclocking but it is stable and cool. The RAID option is tremendous and i really wanted the Firewire option. I, nor my bud have had any problems with this board so far. If you dont want RAID then i agree with the other dude to get the board he got. But this board kicks ass if you want all the options, and the sofarsogood overclocking. Good luck!

You wont fry the board if your not overclocking unless you have no clue on building. And you should attempt to overclock just to learn more. The built-in monitor is as tue as it comes, but i did remember one problem that is very minor--we both have 3 fans and it only shows the temp for two of them. NOt sure why but maybe get fixed sometime later.

Thanks Doc. Let me know if you solve the solution with the three fans. If I do overclock, I will do it only minimally. Just as you said " to learn."

GESETHI, I really hope that you seriously consider the SY-P4I mobo. It was the top pick of Tom's Hardware, and the rest of the research I have done seems to point to it being worth the money. If you don't like it, send it back.

Plus the board is red, white and blue and the sticker is cool! POWERED BY SOYO!!! :)

Overclocking it will not be a problem for you, but i do recommend Crucial ram for this too, if you overclock it as well.

This may sound cheesy, but I have never been so impressed by how a MB looked. I almost wanna buy this thing just for its looks and get the Lian-Li case with the plexi-glass side.

LOL, its $50 extra than my current GA-8IRXP. the only difference i have found so far is the firewire port. other than that, my giga-byte has everything else....raid, usb2.0, nic......wish i had the extra $50 but i would rather spend it on more memory than this board.

btw, tomshardware went with this giga-byte board for the 3Ghz mark, makes me wonder why.......

thanks for the suggestion though.....
