Soyo SY-KT333 or SY-KT400? (CPU limitations)

My friend is looking to buy a new motherboard to go along with his Athlon XP2600+. He's a bit tight on cash and he originally planned on buying the KT-400 but by downgrading to a KT333, he could save $50. One of the few things that is holding him back on the KT-333 purchase is that it says it only takes up to 2200+ CPUs. Will the SY-KT333 take his 2600+ out of the box...after a BIOS upgrade...or not at all? Thanks in advance.

Out of the box, the motherboard probably won't recognise the CPU properly at 2600+, but with a BIOS upgrade it will most definately.

My MSI motherboard is capable of all the processors up to 2800+ so far tested, with the latest BIOS (and at 333Mhz FSB btw).

Check out the review on 12/4/02 about the Nforce2 boards. These MB's are superior to anything VIA has on the market. If your friend is tight on cash check out the EPox and Leadtech alternatives. Both of these boards can be had on Newegg.com for approximately $120. Also Newegg has the stripped down A7N8X for about $128.

I purchased an Delux A7N8X about a week ago and have successfully overclocked it to 211 Mhz (highest setting in the BIOS). Too bad my ram isn't able to do this speed.

So tell your friend to but an Nforce2 MB.
