update: found out that the line-out port is fried. mic and line-in work fine. tested this by changing the audio to 4 speaker and 5.1 speaker surround modes. I then plug headphones into the mic jack which is center/sub in 5.1 mode and it worked. plugged them into the line-in, which are surround speakers, and it worked.
please go to this post to help me furthur: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=33&threadid=1767170

Hey everyone. I just recently aquired a new motherboard and CPU. It's a Soyo Dragon 2 V1.0 board with CMedia CMI9761A onboard sound. I have installed the drivers for windows 2000 that I downloaded right off of Soyo's site. No go. I've also tried some RealTek AC97 drivers, no go. I've also tried drivers for this onboard chip from cmedia's website, no go.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Yes, I am plugged into the right sound-out port. Yes, my speakers are on. Yes, I've tried headphones. Yes, I've tried the speakers and headphones with another computer. Yes, they do both work.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Go to your Device Manager. Find your sound card and when you highlight it, click on properties. What does it say is wrong?

That's the thing - it says the device is working properly. It's baffling my mind!

I'm begining to think that the sound ports are fried or something.

anyone?!?!?!

Now, when I try to install it - it says it found new hardware - "Realtek AC '97 device"

WHAT?!

Some drivers work only for certain ver of sp, or at least a minimum sp.

Says in the thread description 😉

SP4. Everything is nice and up to date, too.
