SOYO motherboard quality?

Hey all -

I just noted something on Viahardware.com that Soyo is releasing a new KT-266 based motherboard in August, called the Dragon. Due in part to the onboard LAN and RAID and more due to to the fact that I'm obsessed with Dragons, I'm rather interested in seeing it when it comes out.

Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about motherboards, and was wondering if anyone could give me some input on the quality of Soyo motherboards.

Any positive or negative comments, please let me know!

Thanks!

I have used more than a few over the years and am quite happy with them. Mostly BX boards, but never had to RMA one.

Now are you obsessed with fictional dragons or the Komodo?

I've had the K7VIA Soyo M/B for about a year with no problems. It was my first Soyo board, but I have been well satisfied with it.

I've used a couple of Soyo BX boards with no problems. From a standpoint of stability and quality, their 133A board gets good reviews and as I recall, in selected benchmarks it shows quicker numbers than some of the better known boards.
I would not be uncomfortable using a Soyo board, even though I lean toward the Iwill and Asus products in the 133A offerings.

Yeah I built a system with a SOYO K7VTAB with a Duron for him. Pretty good mobo, very stable. I just dont know about if its very overclockable. But its a good mobo.
I would use a SOYO.

Both Soyo BX boards I had died in just over a year. I must say their tech support folks are fantastic. Of course they probably don't have to deal with all of the rifraf that the Abit techs get.

I had my Soyo SY-6VCA (slot 1, the 7VCA is the socket 370 version) VIA Apollo Pro running my 550@733 for a good 10 months, or so, then threw a 1Ghz on a slocket, and got it to 1125 (sold it after a couple of weeks :(), then had a 700@933 on a slocket for a few months after that.

Rock solid stable the entire time. I started w/ a regular IDE setup, the did a SCSI setup. It didn't have a problem w/ anything I threw at it at all.

I finally pulled it out on Wednesday night to replace it w/ a DDR T-Bird setup. However I liked it so much that I bought an SY-K7VTA Pro to put the Duron 700 (figured I'd keep both rigs the same format for interchangeability reasons) my bud gave me into. This one seems very high quality to me (much higher quality looking then the 6VCA does), and for $95 seemed like a steal.

The only drawback to Soyo's are the voltage on my PIII one (only up to 10% higher), and the limited FSB options on both. There's plenty there, but not individual incriments.

I'd say if it has all the options you want, tests good (ie. stable, and fast), and gets at least a few good reviews. Go for it. I've always been amazed that Soyo's aren't more well known around here. I love mine, and didn't think twice about getting another.

I just hope I'm still singing this same tune after I install that socket A one I have sitting next to me next week. ;) :)

You don't find many people complaining and asking for help with their Soyo M/B. This could be due to the fact that there are not alot of them around. but I think it is because they are good stable boards. Not feature rich for overclocking, but not everyone is into that. Some M/Bs have whole newsgroup sections devoted to fixes and work arounds. JMO
