I would highly recommend format and reinstall.

You don't mention your OS if it is of the nt type definately reinstall. On the 9x variety I have had to format and reinstall about as many times as I have successfully upgraded. There are some things you can do to increase your chances, but you are better off with new install on a 9x system anyways. Clean registry and all. ;)

You don't have to format + re-install..... first thing is to try it. That's what I usually do. I try to boot up and install new drivers and such, and if it turns out to not work, then I bite the bullet and format. You dont have to just format before you attempt it though. It MAY work just fine. (In my experience more times than not, it does.)

Yea, I just read your thread yield. I have not ever tried it with xp.

I have read a lot of problems with 2000 and figured the same with xp.

i'm running win 98 se ...i will try with out doing a reformat..it would seem that there would be more of a chance of incompatability switching from a p3 to a amd 2400 or 2600 xp atholon.wouldn't you say old chap.....confusing the hard drive....looking for the intel chip drivers..and seeing the via....i yield to you old boy...i've bump then out before without a reformat but that was using the intel chip set..like you said sometimes it works sometimes it do'nt...
ANYONE CARE TO ELABERATE..ON THIS ISSUE

I have done it with 98 successfully a few times. I would recommend you download the via 4 in 1 driver and have it on your disk. That is if you are buying a via chipset. The problem I have had in the past was trying to load the drivers. The cd wouldn't work because of no drivers and the hard drive being in compatability mode. Having the drivers on your drive will make life a little easier if this happens to you. ;)
