got this board from microcenter bargain bin (~$20). when it came, the seal on the static bag was broken. so that meant someone else returned it. unfortunately, i didnt have time back then.

3 months later, i finally started playing with it.

everything works, except the lan. I got the latest lan driver from VIA.

"Via Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter"

it says "network cable unplugged" when i have a cable connected to it. this cable works with laptop.

so i set it from Auto to 100baseTX. Same. Then i set it to 10baseTx. Now it sees the cable, but i get the yellow triangle with exclamation point saying "limited or no connectivity." but the cable works on my laptop, and i can surf the web w/my laptop.

Any ideas on how to fix the Lan problem? (and no, cant return to microcenter, and i think soyo is out of business)

THX

What device is on the other end of the cable? Switch? Router (with or without DHCP service)? DSL modem (which would require software installed on the machine)?

Just because you got a cable plugged in doesn't mean your network services are installed properly.

If it's just a modem, then you'll need a PPPoE client on your machine.

If it's actually a modem/router combo, then it may be plug&go - but only if the LAN port on the computer is set to be a DHCP client.

it's the mobo :(

just ghosted a k7vta3 w/the same image, and everything worked fine. both the k7vta3 and k7vme use the same via lan driver (rhine II).

time to look for those free after rebate lan cards

Yup, sounds like the ethernet on that board is broken. Before you throw it out, inspect the jack itself for mechanical damage, like bent pins, or, a particularly popular DIY error, one of the case shielding latches being INSIDE the network jack rather than around it.
