I was wondering how to tell the difference between these two boards by just looking at them and not looking at the chipset

They moved a blue component on the dragon that was between the cpu socket corner and memory near the edge. It's not there on the plus which is why the alpha 8045 fits. Go to newegg and look at the "see it" link for the each board and you will see the difference
