<< I noticed that you had an ATI Viddy card. Do you have the ATI multimedia applet running? Some times it messes with sound cards, in my case Soundblaster live Xgamer. I have to reload my drivers for my sound card after I load the ATI MMC applet drivers. Also have you down loaded the latest ATI drivers? Mainly the MMC 7.6 although I am not sure if that is the correct number for the rage cards. I have an early Radeon AIW. But I bet you can get Linux going on your seystem. Linux hates mine. Har!
Heh what are you using for sound playback? Just a thought. Check and see if you are using the sound playback that ATI thinks you are. Start at DXdiag and go to sound tab and check what midi devices are shown. Then check device manager and see if there is any thing there that has the darn yellow exclaimation beside it. Then go into set up for your ATI card (playback/movie) and see if the right midi/ sound device is chosen or even there. You may have done this already but I thought I would it a try since I had a similar problem.
Goodluck. >>
wow thanks....yeah, i use ATi, but i dont' have the mmc installed yet, just the driver files, but yeah, i'll go have a look around and make sure i've got the latest ones.....though that wouldn't explain why windows can play startup sounds and winamp can play mp3's with no problem, just windows media player can't see my audio hardware...i know it's in there and working, but this program can't see it....i was wondering if this was a known issue...either way, new drivers can't hurt(hah, unless it's beta) so i'll go grab 'em...thanks
