I just got in the Soyo 24" monitor that's on sale at OM for $300. Nothing immediate looks wrong with it, but I'm confused on one thing.

In XP, my mouse pointer has a small drop shadow.

On my Dell 2001FP monitor, the drop shadow is grey.
On the Soyo, the drop shadow is red....

EDIT: it actually depends on the background. If the pointer is over a white background, the drop shadow is red. When it is over a colored background like grey, the drop shadow is grey.

If the pointer is half over a white background and half over a colored background, the half over the white background has a red drop shadow and the half over the colored background has a grey drop shadow.

EDIT: Now it's gone after fiddling with the OSD. Man this thing is kinda weird. There are two brightness settings. One for the backlight and a second for something else.

Since you are an owner and I haven't gotten to see one in person, does it have a glossy screen? Kinda like the glass on a CRT?

No, the screen is definitely not glossy. This isn't to say that it won't reflect any light, but I've seen screens like those glossy laptop screens and this is definitely not one of them.

I've also heard that HD content doesn't display correctly with this monitor. Is that true? Same with XBOX 360 and PS3. Confirmation would be great :)

Is there any HD content available for download - I can test on mine. It only has DVI and RGB inputs, no HDMI - can you play HD content without an HDMI connector? I'm not up to date in HD yet...

Yes you can play HD content without HDMI, I've dont it with my 22" LG with DVI. Where to download HD content I'm not sure. I hope someone will test this :(

I don't know much about HD stuff either. I've viewed a couple of HD Crysis videos though and they looked fine. Does that count? :/

There's always HD rips assuming you own the movies or HD trailers.
The second brightness setting is for the OSD IIRC

I tried to connect my Dishnetwork HD box to this monitor via a HDMI-to-DVI cable but it wouldn't display anything.
How can I get the monitor to display 720p or 1080i? Can anyone help please?
