Soy milk in schools (Poll) Yes/No? what.

Hmm, hopefully the poll will work (my first), but...
Im doing a essay paper thing for english regarding this issue and was just wondering what any of you poll-monkeys thought about it. Try to keep it civil and not get into a flame war. I am neither lactose-intolerant or vegetarian, i just remembered that there is something going on about this and decided to write on it for one of my assignments. Im just trying to get a general idea of what people think.

According to any of you, should soy milk be available in schools for anybody that chooses to drink that instead of cow milk? Lactose intolerant kids can get it already if they have a doctors note but vegan vegetarians probably couldnt because its not really a medical issue. What the problem is, is that the schools would not be refunded for their 'soy milk' costs if they dont have a doctors note from the kids they are buying it for. I think it should just be available to anybody that atleast wants to try it out.

I have not had it, therefore i have no idea what it really tastes like, so dont flame about 'its so nasty why would anybody want it anyway' blah blah blah. I dont care. Just do you think it should be available. Period.

(edit cause i wanted to :))

I personally love soy milk, especially in coffee drinks.

But I don't think a dime should be spent because picky-ass b!tch kids want to avoid milk. As you stated, the ones who NEED the soy milk can get it.
I mean, if they want to add soy milk, why don't they go ahead and add gardenburgers and soy dogs and everything else? Veganism / Vegetarianism is a mental condition and should not be a concern.

i dont see why not. you wouldnt have to buy a lot for the small amount of people that would like to consume it.

if you look at school food you will find that not only is most of it absolutely disgusting, but most of it is meat. instead of adding just soy milk, they should serve alternatives to meat in schools as well. for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. personally i'm a vegetarian and it saddens me to see the amount of intolerance that people have for us. i'm not a militant vegetarian that will go around trying to get you to stop eating meat. i just don't like consuming dead flesh. so in conclusion i think it would be nice to make non-meat choices available in schools for kids.

Incidentally my mom just made a patch of soy milk today. Personally, I prefer cow milk with my cookies.

what?

i don't get it, shouldn't there be a "it doesn't matter" option?
or
"leave it up to the school" option?

most schools already have orange juice and other non-dairy drinks, so i don't see the need for soy milk.

they should serve alternatives to meat in schools as well

i don't know about you, but most of the meals we had did not consist of meat, and what "meat" there was, was of questionable origin. it is not the school's responsibility to cater to every kid's tastes. if you don't like their lunches, why don't you just bring your own?

FoBoT - Well sorta the it doent matter thing is 'i wanna see results', and it isnt the schools choice. Its the states. Public schools wont just be going out and buying a bunch of this stuff, they know they wouldnt be repaid by the state and some public schools are already crappy enough as it is when it comes to the money they have to spend.

i graduated a while ago. and i'm not talking about catering to childrens needs, i'm talking about providing a healthy alternative to the crap that they serve in schools. most of which is meat.

Personally, I don't like the stuff. Tastes like a bean (big surprise). But my wife likes it. The kids, who aren't lactose intolerant, like it but drink whole milk too. The answer to your survey question boils down to cost for me. Property taxes here are outragous so if the schools can do it for the same cost, fine. Or pass the cost onto the parent requesting it.

you do realize you can get every protein found in meat from other foods such as soy? just an example, and i'm not implying they should serve soy based foods in schools either. just less disgusting processed meat would help work towards kids having nutritional meals.

you make it sound like the majority of the meal is meat. that is simply not true, at least where i live. the meals here are more or less proportional to that pyramid thingy.

i guess it's all relative, but most of the things i used to see in school consisted of meat. even things like spaghetii and pizza were always excessively "garnished" with meat. you could be right though, it must vary by where you live.

well... do you think any meat is excessive? our pizza had little .5cm by .75cm cubes of this red solid that was supposed to be pepperoni. about 3 per square inch. spaghetti... don't believe we had meat on that... ravioli, well there was meat in every bite, but it is ravioli, what do you expect. i dunno, i usually just got burger and fries :)

excessive as in, why serve only pizza with meat and only spaghetti with meat sauce. there were no meatless alternatives available. ie: pizza without meat, or regular marinara sauce for spaghetti.

okay, that is not excessive, that is normal! if you look at the little food pyramid, you will see what i'm talking about... it's not like the amount of meat is disproportional.

they serve it with meat to attempt to give a balanced meal. nobody wants tofu topped pizza, well at least most people don't.

but anyways, i am fine with providing alternatives, provided those who want them will pick up any associated costs.

all they would have to do is take the meat off of the pizza and out of the sauce, or at least keep them seperate. a salad bar would provide enough sources to make up from the small amount of protein intake lost from the meat.

schools already have 2%, whole, chocolate, fat free, and vitamin d enhanced milk

If you don't like cows milk, bring a doctors note or buy a soft drink
