Yeah...

I wasn't even going to post until I figured I could hit it close with a few choice parts... Then the limit was raised and I lost interest.

The reason I wasn't (speaking for myself, not others) was because this kind of request actually irritates me - generally speaking. "I want this, and I expect to pay this." My first reaction would be "Uh, okay, go waste someone else's time."

Heck, why not just sell the 8800 GTX for $100 (which would be an easy sale) and then spend $400 (now $450) on some random computer which comes close?

What soxfan wants is "Priceline for computer parts" which does not yet exist.

http://www.pricewatch.com

...back in the 90's, that would be the site to go to! I have no idea if it's worth the pixels it's printed on today.

Dude you live in Blowing Rock? That place is nice. I live on the coast (Jacksonville) and have been that way a few times. Really nice area.

OKAY BACK ON TOPIC!! 😀

Wow, and I live right between you two, in Charlotte!

Stinkin OS being 1/3rd the cost like Denithor mentioned before really put a wrench in the overall quality of the build.

That's why I just erased my components when he opened the contest up to pre-builts. The OS is practically free when you are buying the lowest configurations.

Which is why I made the comment in the first place, and suggested a prebuilt up at the top.

My recs could probably use some fine-tuning since the deadline has been extended, if I have time tonight I'll look into what kinda deals I can find. But it's my birthday so I may be out late with family.

Happy Birthday Denithor! Have fun out when you're celebrating
I still like the build I put together, except the case (hideous abomination in my eyes), but that's more aesthetic than performance related so I guess it doesn't matter. If you had a spare case sox, it'd be terrific even if it doesn't cut the costs drastically.

Edit: Sorry for all the seeming spam lately.

Sorry you lost interest when the limit was raised.

Also sorry you are irritated by this type of request. I realized this would be an issue for many on this forum, hence the offer of a (rather good IMO) prize.

I haven't tried to sell the 8800gtx and earn capital for the build for two reasons. 1, I work ridiculous hours every day, and I it is easier for me to just hang on to the part then take the time and effort to sell it. I used it as a prize in this contest for the very reason I stated in the original post (i.e., because I am not using it, and figured someone else would). And yes, I realize it is a waste of money.

Finally, I thought the contest would be infinitely more interesting way of addressing my issue of lack of time and the need to build or buy a pc. I certainly thought it would be more fun then it turned out to be.

Sorry if this post sounds a bit flat, but a good friend of mine passed away today. I'm honestly amazed I can even keep it together. People as nice as my friend should not die so young, especially when they have two little kids.

soxfan, sorry for your loss. 🙁

Pricewatch is just a price listing engine. With Priceline you can supposedly say "I want a hotel room and I want to pay this much $$$" and you would get offers.

I somehow don't see that happening with new computer parts. Used, sure, but new parts have a cost involved. No profit over costs = go out of business.

With services like a hotel, prices are already very variable/seasonal, plus anything over a baseline that covers operational/fixed costs is profit, so if the hotel is only at 1/4 capacity during a slow season but that capacity already pays for all fixed costs, then if someone wants $20 off a $100 room, often the manager will approve the discount. Now, if a hotel was at 95% capacity and there's a convention in town, thanks but no thanks.

Sorry to hear that soxfan 🙁 It's tough losing close friends, happened twice to me and it still hurts...

to soxfan - hang in there, Chief

A prebuilt or bare-bones still looks to be your best option - if I stumble across one I'll post it up for you.

Seconded, again. Especially since you work so many hours, you really don't have time to build a system, troubleshoot anything that doesn't work, etc.

Thanks, all, who wished me a HBD. I feel old (or is that the hangover?).

Sympathies to soxfan. I lost my grandfather, little sister and favorite uncle, all over the course of one summer several years back, so I know how you feel. You'll never get over it completely but time does (eventually) blunt the pain.
