A picture of my baggage? Are you crazy?

I measured my bag before I left my house and it met the specs per Southwest's online policy. And I am not exagerating when I say that my carryon bag was no larger than anyone elses bag, and in many cases, people had bags larger than mine. I boarded the plane to Chicago fine with no problems, at at that point, my bag was infact stuffed to it's limit. But during my stay in Chicago, I unloaded alot of the stuff in my baggage to my sister (I was bringing them to her) and my bad was considerably lighter and less packed than before, yet this particular time, the man scanning boarding passes refuses to let me carry on my baggage.

There is no exageration there.

I've never had a problem with SWA. While no-frills, service has always been courteous and helpful, flights are usually on time, prices relatively low, and with only 1 fatality on their record (and that was a non-passenger), they have the 2nd best safety record for any airline in history (after Qantas, which has the unique distinction of never having had a fatality, ever).

Just what I figured, a pathetic child who laughs at those who self-censor their own language while he self-censors his own. Grow a pair before calling somebody else out over it. Or at least grow up, growing a pair is probably something you'll never accomplish.

That's why you buy quality baggage that is made of out rip-stop material. I recommend Samsonite, but after you fly once with it...it's used. Who cares what the outside looks like. Luggage is only supposed to look pretty the day you buy it.

Yea, well, the fact that my luggage got stained isn't really an issue for me. That kind of thing happens, but thats exactly why I always carryon my baggage. And I fully understand why airlines have the carryon baggage policies, and I always abide by them.

Tell them to get a manager and waste their time. If you met their exact website specs they wont have much to stand on.

I find in the airline industry you either meet really nice people, or complete a-holes. There doesnt appear to be a middle ground. They also have this superiority complex that they are somehow doing you a favor for you flying with them.

sounds like a sh!tty employe issue, not a southwest issue.

So what should I do. Should I just write my complaint and send it to Southwest or should I take further action because there must have been other motives for this employee's actions.

And it is a Southwest issue because it is a Southwest employee.

What exactly do you suspect the motives to be?

It doesn't seem right that he would single you and your bag out if other, larger bags were being allowed on.

Well, the guy just stands there and people give him their boarding passes to scan before entering the plane. The boarding pass has the passenger's name on it. My last name happens to be Middle Eastern.

In that case, I've got to give you kudos for not posting about that first and trying to make it a racial issue when it seems quite possible the employee you were dealing with is just a fvcking idiot.

hopefully swa will hook you up with a free something or other.... maybe not a free flight, but something... like... free alcohol on any flight with them for the next year or something... that'd be sweet and totally worth the hassle.

So what should I do at this point. It's Thursday now, and this happened on Tuesday. I have prepared a letter for an official compaint, but Im wondering if there's more I should be doing about this like contacting a lawyer.

There isnt much you can do about it now. I would send the letter and get a name of a regional sales guy or higher up to bug. If it happens again get a manager and waste their time.

What would a lawyer do for you? You didn't incur any damages.

When the general public reads about everyone suing everyone else for bullsh!t, they think the cases actually make it to trial for some reason.

Racial profiling was my first thought, unless there is more to the OP's story than he's telling us. Carry-on sized bags are pretty much all the same size... I don't know why they'd pick one out for the hell of it. Unless the bag was overstuffed, or he had more than one carry-on + one personal item, then there must be more to this story than we know.

Personally, I don't like SWA. The ONLY thing they offer is low-cost airfares, (which isn't a bad thing), but customer service usually isn't great, and IMO, it's more like taking Greyhound than flying. Possibly the worst I've used in recent years, is ATA. Pleasant Hawaiian uses them for most of their SF-Hawaii flights...talk about getting shoved into a cattle-car...I'll usually pay a little more for a few amenities, rather than just find the cheapest "bare-bones" flight, unless it's a very short flight. (under 2 hrs.)

Well, that is one possibilty I've come up with.

I just don't understand why everyone else was allowed to board the plane with the same size carryon with no problems and I was told to have my baggage checked.

There are a few possibilities here:

Either the employee:

a) Was not aware of Southwest's carryon specification policy (which I highly doubt is the case)

b) Read my last name and recognized it as being middle eastern

c) Looked at me and recognized some middle eastern characteristics (another possibility which I highly doubt because I look straight up white.)

d) Was just having a bad day and decided to take it out on me assuming I wouldnt argue.
