South Park Takes on the Islamists

I seriously hope Matt and Trey aren't this stupid. You have to draw a line somewhere - I think the possibility of people being hurt or killed is over the line.

It's because of people like you they made this storyline, and it's because of people like you that the SHOULD show it.

Umm...no. One of the townspeople gave a speech in the episode (quoted in the link) that pretty much covers it.

Freedom of speech is at stake here, don't you all see? If anything, we should all make cartoons of Mohammed and show the terrorists and the extremists that we are all united in the belief that every person has a right to say what they want. Look people, it's been really easy for us to stand up for free speech lately. For the past few decades, we haven't had to risk anything to defend it. One of those times is right now. And if we aren't willing to risk what we have now, then we just believe in free speech, but won't defend it.

THey have the right to show it, thats not a problem, and people dont have the right to kill over them showing it, but I wont watch anymore if they do, because they are disrespecting a lot of people by doing so and for no reason.

they could make the entire show about how a certain race or group of religious people should be killed and promote it....sure they have the right to do it, but should they? Only if they want to lose the show and all their sponsers

Look, I'm not saying I agree with the Islamics that go around killing over this sort of thing, and I'm a huge proponent of free speech. But we know that people will probably be hurt or killed if we piss these guys off, so is it really worth it for a stupid little joke? I think not. Yeah it sucks that the Islams have us at ransom over this, but it's moronic to air this sort of thing when you know for a fact that it will incite violence. Remember, freedoms of speech should not give you the right to biggotry or the right to incite violence.

So it's fair game to disrespect Christians and everyone els2e on the planet but Muslims are off limits?

This last season or two of South Park has been mindnumbingly blunt with its political and social messages. I can't say that I'm a big fan anymore.

Freedom of speech does indeed give you the right to bigotry, and about the only thing that you can't do is directly threaten someone or call for direct violence. They have every right to do the episode, and you have every right to not watch. As to whether it's "worth it" I guess that's up to each person, but free speech is not about whether something is "worth it".

Was it OK when they disrespected the Scientologists, Mormons, Jews, Catholics, hippies, environmentalists, Hollywood.... etc. ?

They have made fun of muslims before and they make fun of every religious group, but this is something that is sacred to muslims (as I understand it) and they do have the right to to do it, but what purpose does it serve, except to piss people off

I dont think there is anyone that thinks they dont have a right to do it, so therefor "Freedom of Speech" is not at stake if everyone agrees they have the right to do it.

but a lot of people think they shouldnt and I am on that side...I will just stop watching if they do, I have the right to do that

<----not in the least bit religious and very for the Freedoms this country has, but I dont agree with doing something just to proove they can

nope, and I have no problem with them making fun of muslims like they do anyone else, but why do something that goes to far...even though they like to make people think they go as far as they can, people still have limits

edit: and in no way will I say, I told you so, if they show it and people get killed or something because of it...I just dont see the point of doing it

I'm actually pretty sure they already have... multiple times. 😉

haha yep...and I love the show and that they push the envelope...I love that my roommate gets really pissed when they make fun of liberals...but I just dont see the point in going down this road...I think most of us are ready for it, but obviously the world isnt...again, of course they have the right to do it, but what do we gain?

we already have the right to do it and no one is saying they dont, so this isnt a freedom of speech question

If you people can't see the difference between making fun of christians/scientologists/jews and depicting a characiture of Mohammed then you're morons. The difference here is that people will almost certainly be killed if they air this episode. How can that not affect you? Yes, under freedom of speech they have every right to do it - but it's just not worth it. Human life is far too valuable to throw away for a joke.

how is this more sacred than the beliefs they have mocked of other religions?

you are definitly making no sense...you can't hold one religions religious belief more scared than another religion's religious belief thats just ridiculous
