South/Northbridge fan just started making tons of noises

All of a sudden today my south/northbridge fan on my DFI NF4 Ultra started making a huge amount of noise. I cleaned it up and made sure nothing was touching it, but it's making my ears bleed anyway.

What is the cause of this? How would I go about getting a replacement for it? Anything I can do to fix it? Can I throttle the fan speed down safely?

thanks

I don't know, but the chipset fan for my A8N-SLI Deluxe went south months ago. Mine just refuses to operate though, but I've been using it constantly since without temperature/overheating problems. You should just replace it.

There is a software solution -----> Speedfan. I use it with all my DFI Ultra-d's. I don't use Smartguardian at all (in fact I uninstall it) At full bore, the chipset fan runs nearly 7000rpm and will wail like a harmonica at that speed. I use Speedfan to slow it down to about 3500 rpm during normal activity and let it ramp up to full speed under heavy load. Funny thing is, I can't perceive a temp difference between the 2 speeds (load or idle).

I do use AS5 on all of the chipsets. I beleive these chips are rated for about 70C, all of mine have never exceeded 55C max load.

There is not much airflow around the chipset area in a typical case setup. If you take a spare fan and point it at the chipset area, you will drop the temp nicely.....

thanks for the help. I'll probably get that one. Is it hard to uninstall the current chipset fan and install the new one? anything I should know?

I tried Speedfan before, the fan is going at 4900 RPM and the temp is at 51C. I have 2 120mm fan in my case (1 exhaust / 1 intake).. should I try to lower the fan's speed? It's at 100% right now.
