Obama should declare Florida a Marine Park for the preservation of [insert unique Marine life here]

A good chunk of south Florida is already a gigantic wildlife preservation lol.

But jokes aside, the situation highlights the fact that a huge chunk of the Floridian economy resides in real estate. The proposed split would be right down the I-4 corridor, which starts in Tampa and travels right through Orlando. The new proposed state includes the greater Tampa and Orlando area, so it’s basically a combination of Tampa, Orlando, and Miami; 2/3rds the population and a tad over 2/3rds the total Floridian economy, which is more than enough to run a state. Florida is predominantly a Republican state, and despite the headlines in our news that paint us as psychopaths, the major cities of Florida are surprisingly well managed, well maintained, and rather self sufficient. Even Tampa has hundreds of millions of dollars in surplus.

We saw what would happen to a city when a hurricane went right over it back in 2006. Water levels rise, and a city like Tampa or Miami would be devastated, so the premise isn’t necessary off base (although we did have a hurricane level Florida back in 1993, which caused billions in damage). There won’t be any split with Florida, but it’s a political move to draw more attention.

At some point, we’re going to have to have a serious discussion about protecting our shorelines.
