So when you think of South Korea, what image/landmark comes to mind?

ie) china - great wall
france - eiffel tower
korea - ????

hehe, honestly, it is really the DMZ. nothing else, at least on a world-wide scale.
There's becktu-san (100m mountain, but it's in North Korea), Cheju Island and that volcano in the middle, there's other places, but they're only known by a korean native, or the asians that live in that region.

anyways.

hangook boon ee sae yo?

Wow. How horribly horribly awkward. You could just ask in English, y'know. 😉

it's super wierd since we've been brought up in an american culture, where elder honorisms are nonexistent. and then suddently to talk in korean in full out polite mode... ya it is wierd haha.

but then again you can't just talk ban-mal w/ each other all of a sudden haha. That'd be just rude.

lose-lose situation 🙁

I can honestly say that having visited South Korea (and not being Korean), the most memorable tourist spot I visited was the DMZ. It was fairly interesting to be staring across one of the last armed borders in the world. Equally interesting to be able (with binoculars) to see into North Korea, first at the BS "prosperity" city they set up right across the border, then a little further in - a real village, where you could actually make out some of the local townspeople walking and biking around. Ironically, way, way off in the distance, you could make out a larger North Korean city (can't remember the name) whose most distinctive landmark was a 50 ft bronze statue of Kim-Il Sung (I couldn't actually tell it was Kim, I just saw a bright gold spot and the tour guide told us what it was). Also, the "infiltration" tunnels dug underneath the DMZ by the North Koreans and the "interception" tunnels dug to meet them by the South Koreans were also very interesting. Our tour guide (a soldier) had a very "California" accent to his english and when he was asked about it by one of the women in the tour group, he revealed to us that he pretty much grew up in L.A. and had gone to UCLA. 🙂

This is incorrect use of boon, first the use of honorable boon ending with a "ee ae yo" is not right.

Second, boon is rarely used when asking if you are of a nationality. Although grammatically correct, colloquially never used.

A more natural sentence is, "Hangook saram ib ni kka?"

or "Dok il saram ib ni kka?" "Choonggook saram ib ni kka?"

The "ib ni kka" ending is sufficent in offering respect.

i think of where they filmed winter sonata. 😀

and then jeju island for all in. 😀

and of course all the places they filed bul sae. so, yeah lots of shots of inchon airport!

I second the one for Starcraft 😉

"Ib ni ka" would not be sufficient for a conservative korean who would demand you speak in Honorific form. Though the first sentance you said would indeed be a more natural and appropriate sentance for this situation.
