Well, ok, so I'm only seeing what's outside the gate of Osan AB (Songtan Village), but it seems like a good place to me. I would never have expected to say this, but the shopping here is amazing -- I've been steadily helping the South Korean economy since coming here last Monday. Friendly people, good bars, good food. Just have to dodge the protests that occasionally crop up!

Anyone else in Korea right now?

AndrewR,

I'll have a three and a half day layover on my way from Sydney to Toronto in about a months time. Let me know what's good and what I should avoid. Thanks.

I just wish someone would've told me that their Airport is closed after 11PM (security reasons, I guess they're afraid of their Northern brethren or something) and you've get out of there or being carted by the cops. Ruined my holiday since I can't speak Korean and having to get out and find lodging on my own for what supposed to only be a transit flight, not to mention during midnight is not exactly a simple thing to do. Good thing there're some real nice & helpful people in there so I can't claimed the country sux :p
BTW, does anyone know if the new airport (Inchon) also has this stupid rule ?

Don't even get me started on Asian "cuisine". Apparently the entire male population of Asia suffers from erectile dysfunction, hence their wholesale consumption of endangered species to help with "sexual potency". Yeah, that panda liver and tiger penis is really going to help you rise to the occasion.

for the record, eating dog meat originated from the korean war when there was nothing else to eat. nowadays its only the old people who eat dog meat and the younger people feel the same way about eating dog as we do.

Snails

Do I even have to mention haggis?
Horsemeat anyone?

Generally, people don't seem to have trouble with these things...but mention rover and it's "EEEEWWWWW!" all across the board. Too Funny.

wonderful how one jerk can turn a whole thread into dirt.... anyways, AndrewR, one of my best friends is in Korea right now, on some youth return to the "mother country" trip kinda deal... he says there's a bunch of Korean kids (well not kids, probably around college students' age), mostly from the US, Canada, and Germany. He also says there's a bunch of hot German/Korean chicks there ;) Just talked to him on AIM earlier tonite... ahh, the wonders of the Internet :)

I visited Korea and some relatives for a month about 10 years ago. Fun trip. You ought to go to the DMZ if you can, pretty neat.

edit: There was this fantastic restaurant we ate at. I have no idea what the name was, but you had to make reservations a few weeks in advance. Some of the food there was top notch.

The Incheon International Airport has a transit hotel where you can book a room for a 6 hour block. One on either side of the airport. There is also this hotel just a 6 minute trip from IIA. They'll even pick you up if you book with them in advance.

Not quite. I have seen pictures of the dog markets, mainly young people selling the meat, I've seen a picture of a young woman eating it in a restauraunt...

I was there for World Cup, and I lived there for 4 months in '99. Seoul is an awesome city. Friendly people, great food, beautiful women. Have a great time!

And don't forget to try dog while you're there...it's delicious! ;)

freakin tree huggers, meats meat. dogs aren't all sugar and spice, a dog in oakland ca ripped a kid to shreds, face ripped off, he's still barely recovering and screwed for life, another mauled a woman to death in sf. from reports the walls were spattered with blood, it was a horror show. and there is case after case of this every year:p sh*ttiest way to die being mauled ... cows don't maul you ever. worry your little heads about the cows. set your priorities straight people!

This thread is hilarious!! :p

EDIT--BTW, my mother is Korean and she said that dog is not a big part of their cuisine. Like the Japanese, they'll eat almost anything from the ocean. Korean food rocks!!
