South Dakota Refused To Shut Down, Now Faces One Of The Largest Coronavirus Outbreaks In The Country

By now we know the highly contagious nature and lethality of this virus. We know what needs to be done until treatments/vaccines are developed. Yet, we have a red state phenomenon of "we don't need no stinking CDC" "We don't have to listen to Dr. Fauci, we have Trump". Now we have this. What should be done with these Republican Governor's when their ignorance causes not only outbreaks in their state but it spreads to the rest of the country?
More than 300 workers at Smithfield Foods Sioux Falls facility tested positive for coronavirus, accounting for about half of all statewide cases and making the facility—now closed indefinitely—one of the largest coronavirus hotbeds alongside the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt and Cook County Jail in Chicago.

Gov. Kristi Noem is one of five governors yet to issue a statewide stay-at-home order, saying that it is the job of individuals, not the government “to exercise their right to work, to worship and to play. Or to even stay at home.”

On Monday, Noem held a media briefing to announce that South Dakota will be the first to host statewide trials to test hydroxychloroquine for treating and preventing COVID-19, a potential treatment touted by President Trump and entangled in political controversy.

This chick is so Trumped up not only is she stuck on stupid, she's wasting state funds on trials already being done by the federal government. Guess who's she's trying to please? At the expense of her people's lives.

Her actions just moved South Dakota to the front of the line for ventilators and PPE from the fed stockpile.

I saw this last night, and the stupidity is that this jump in cases did not in inspire her to shut SD down.
Her relying on hydroxychloroquine to help is a waste of time.

There was a study in Brazil that was halted because too many people were dying at the higher dosage.

"Roughly half the 81 study participants were given a dose of 450 milligrams of chloroquine twice daily for five days, while the rest were prescribed a higher dose of 600 milligrams for 10 days. Within three days, researchers started noticing heart arrhythmias in patients taking the higher dose. By the sixth day of treatment, 11 patients had died, leading to an immediate end to the high-dose segment of the trial."

well, if you kill the victim does that stop the spread? I wonder just how contagious a dead body is.

reminds me of the scene from monty python and the holy grail - 'bring out your dead'

I really hope seeing how despicably shit Republican politicians are leads the Midwest states start to unfuck themselves. Unfortunately, we're seeing that even in states that realize it (Kansas and Wisconsin come to mind), it takes years for them to, and by then its too late to undo the damage and then you'll be stuck seeing how long it'll take to weather the storm of stupidity that the Republicans unleashed, all the while they continue to do damage while you try to get rid of them via voting.

I forget what they called Kansas (testbed or something), guess we should call South Dakota their petri dish.

I remain 1,000% opposed to any form of Government ordered shutdown. It should be prohibited by law.

The Federal government is in charge of all Interstate Commerce according to the Constitution. Please explain how a shutdown falls outside of this mandate?

Makes sense, this has always been the known danger of chloroquine and why it's such a risky drug to prescribe. Combine that with the fact that Covid-19 greatly increases the risk of heart failure you have the potential for the medicine making things worse.

There hasn't been any studies yet but my understanding from reading front line accounts of EMT's in NY is that the majority of the Covid-19 deaths at home they're seeing are sudden in nature and involve heart failure.

That's an interesting read.

I certainly lean toward the liberal side of things and generally oppose a lot of government intervention in daily life, but this really is one of those "Acting in the cause of public good." areas.
