Hopefully there are young ACLU lawyers with family histories of living into really old age waiting in the wings.

Huh. I thought Stevens would retire before Souter. Dude is almost 90. Stevens must be looking at Souter and saying, "V-V-V-Vaginaaaaaa."

Most president wait for an opportunity like this.
On Obama`s 101 st day in office he gets the opportunity....that is totally cool!!

Janet currently has the crappiest, no-win job in Washington and is an experienced Fed prosecutor. Maybe she'll request a switch, assuming she doesn't have 2012 VP ambitions.

This election was very important in terms of stopping the right-wing radicalization of the Supreme Court that was split evenly with 4 radical federalists + Kennedy.

Thank goodness Obama will not appoint a fifth, and will instead appoint - as he said - a justice in the mold of the excellent Earl Warren.

LOL...shes getting laughed out of her current job...

This changes nothing. It is a liberal judge that is going to get replaced by another liberal. Call me when something exciting happens.

I don't see much upside for Obama with this pick.

He is replacing one liberal with another. If he goes to far to the left or right he gets attacked for it, but if he follows Souter with a clone then people can say he is boring.

The real fireworks start when one of the right wing justices leave or die.

Pretty funny that a mainstream judge like Souter - appointed by a Republican, the same one who appointed the incompetent, radical Thomas - is called a 'liberal'.

Just goes to show what happens when there aren't any actual liberals for comparison. The goal posts just move so that conservatives are 'liberal' and radicals are 'conservative'.

Ginsburg a liberal? She was the suggestion of the *Republicans* to Clinton, a moderate who they would offer easy approval to if he didn't appoint a liberal.

I hope Obama nominates the most liberal activist candidate he can find.

Of course. That way Democrats will be able to resort to their favored tactic of calling Republicans racist/sexist if they oppose his nominee.

Yes, that way we can have even more bailouts.. and taxes.. and incompetent people running government(Geitner). yea!!!! Its almost a Trifecta - president, congress, and then hopefully in the future, judiciary.

Really, from you. I'm shocked.

Surprised you aren't campaigning for the outright dissolution of the court so he could assume his emperor powers.

Yes, Supreme Court justices are in charge of bailouts and taxes.

.

Funny, liberals are broadly skeptical to oppposed to Geitner; and the issue with him is not competence, but agenda.

First right thing you have said.

Fortunately for the country, it's one of the left-wingers that is retiring. He'll be replaced with some radical lefty, but that still doesn't change the balance of the court. The problem comes if/when one of the "reasonable 5" leaves and gets replaced with a left-winger.

Yep, we'll for sure get a radical leftist appointed, but it should be quite hilarious to see BHO and the MSM try to claim the person is a "moderate"... just like they did with Ginsberg.
