Sourround sound issues in Vista

Well, I have a 5.1 speaker setup. To compliment this I have a Creative Audigy 2 ZS Gamer soundcard. In XP (my old computer as well...) this card and speakers seemed to always work fine in a 5.1 setup. When I brought the card and speakers to my newer computer, on vista, it seems stuck on 2.1 sound.

When I try to "configure speakers" in the vista audio panel, it starts on Stereo Speakers. I move it to 5.1, and the speakers test fine, but after the wizard, it seems to revert back to 2.1!!!

When I go to Creative's program to handle the soundcard, I can select 5.1 as an option... but then the program goes unresponsive for a few seconds AND I CAN WATCH IT REVERT ITSELF BACK TO 2.1!!!

I had these speakers working in 5.1 about a week ago with all of my games, except now for some reason it doesn't. The only thing I can think of installing was Bioshock... which is a game, and where I first noticed the problem yesterday.

My PC specs are as follows:
Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit
Intel E6850 @ 3ghz (stock)
2gig OCZ PC2-6400 rev 2 ram
74.4gig 10krpm raptor (vista is on here)
MSI 8800GTX (factory OC'ed) (latest drivers + latest dx10)
Audigy 2 ZS gamer soundcard

Do you have the latest drivers for Vista from Creative? I know the first release was a bit buggy. I think they have been fixed.

hmm.. not sure about 2 ZS, but the X FI is working fine.

make sure you have configured your THX settings, your speakers settings, and your surround settings using the Creative Sound Panel, and not the Vista sound panel.

Meh. I'm using the Creative "Audio Console"

Every time i switch the speaker configuration from 2/2.1 speakers to 5.1 speakers, it freezes for just a tad, then switches back to 2.1 on it's own...

now that is some serious problem there then.

have you been able to find and download new drivers along with new software for vista?

I would try reinstalling your audio drivers. Also there was a sync option with windows control panel last time I used Creative drivers. This changed the speaker config in windows to match what was selected in the creative drivers. Perhaps Vista has its own sync w/ the creative drivers and they are reverting the other's changes back.

PurdueRy has the right idea, but no, if the option is enable, then regardless if you make changes in the the Sound Blaster control panel, or the sound volume from vista, the same setting should stick on both sides, including the speaker settings.

try maybe setting it to 4.1 or 7.1 and see if it sticks.

maybe it is just a bug with the 5.1 setting that does not stick by some weird reason.

i recall reading something like that from the Creative driver page that being a known issue that got fixed previously

Ton's of people are complaining about this on Creative's forum. Basically, the Vista driver for the Audigy series hasn't been updated since 3/16/07 - and that was a re-release of a beta driver that was already around for a while before that. Long story short, Creative's drivers for Audigy cards are not good. Who knows when (if ever) they'll release a new driver.
