sources pointed out that dumping inventories to retail channels is Intel's last resor

OEM inventories.

Which means Dell, HP, et al, aren't selling as many PCs (desktop, presumably, since laptops have soldered chips that would be useless on the DIY market) as they would normally.

Because tablets and laptops.

And because Windows 8.

Would have thought somebody at Intel would have done the math better than this.

Probably true that desktop PC sales are not what was anticipated, however, the article doesn't really give any hard numbers to back up any of its claims, so who knows what it means.

In the past when Intel has done something like this they rebate the retailers. Given the slowdown in PC shipments that may not be the case this time around.

I dont see any rise in shops offering tray CPUs at all. Newegg doesnt sell any either.

Also Intel would never sell tray products to anyone but OEMs. And tray products got a very different warranty policy.

http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-032344.htm

What is an OEM or tray processor and how long is the warranty on the processor?
An OEM / tray processor is one that is sold wholesale, typically in bulk quantities, to system manufacturers like HP, Dell, or Acer. These processors are usually sold in a tray format and integrated by the OEM or reseller into a PC. The OEM processor warranty length is set by the individual vendor and warranty services are provided by the vendor. We recommend that you consult the warranty documentation that came with your system to find your warranty terms and conditions.
Can I contact Intel directly for a processor replacement for an OEM or tray processor?
No. You need to contact your place of purchase or computer manufacturer in regard to OEM processor warranty replacement. Intel does not provide warranty service for OEM processors.

But again, the article is from digitimes with "sources". Thats about equal to roll the 8ball.

This is most likely referring to sales outside of the US market, "retail channels worldwide".

Yea, well AMD still sells some CPUs to end users in tray, or let's say you get the box with CPU in it but there's no heatsink, sticker or user guide, you get just CPU.

I dont think AMD sells tray CPUs to anyone. It always comes from OEMs that sells a surplus onwards. Either on purpose to negotiate cheaper prices and to cash in a profit on selling them onwards. Or simply due to miscalculation of usage.

Wow, I used to buy OEM (tray) CPUs from Newegg. When did they stop? I guess I haven't been paying attention.

I remember buying OEM Intel chips quite often in the late 90's early 2000's. They've certainly done it before. I believe they came in a brown box without a fan.

They haven't been sold for ages...it's been a while ;)

I was also a big fan of OEM CPUs - I can't think of one instance of using a boxed CPU cooler. I could do without that and the shiny intel sticker that comes with the boxed CPU. ;)

I wouldn't say it's been ages, with Newegg it's been 1.5-2 years.

You can buy those stickers on eBay. My CPU came with a blue one. I wanted a black one to match my case better. I decided it wasn't worth $5.

http://vr-zone.com/articles/no-evidence-that-intel-has-pushed-oem-chips-into-retail/44743.html

Except in this case Digitimes’ report based on its claims from its “Taiwan-based retail channels” don’t hold up.
VR-Zone visited half a dozen retailers in Taipei’s Guang Hua Digital Plaza (a multistory PC component and electronics mall), but none had any Core i5 and Core i7 OEM-use chips available for individual sale. Sources VR-Zone spoke to at PChome’s (a Taiwanese computer e-tailer) central office also denied any claims of OEM chips being available in retail channels.

Intel likely has several million CPUs they need to discount.

"Both firms estimate that PC shipments declined worldwide by approximately 11 percent year-over-year in the second quarter of 2013. However, break down the regions and a vast disparity in data appears. In the United States Gartner says that shipments only declined by 1.9 percent, while in EMEA, defined as Europe the Middle East and Africa, shipments declined by nearly 17 percent (a complete data set is not yet available for the Asia-Pacific region).
Manufacturers shipped 76 million PCs between April and June, down from 85 million during the same period last year."

Me too. Intel definitely sold bare OEM CPU in the past, I don't see any reason why they couldn't do it again.

The article is dated today. Give it a few days before you proclaim it wrong, it takes time for inventory to move.

I'd honestly love to see OEM Ivy Bridges at Newegg. But it seems unlikely, since that would cannibalize sales of Haswell.

A tray 3770K cost the same as a boxed 4770K on geizhals. And the tray 4770K is actually the highest priced. So not sure what you had expected.

In my past experience, a tray CPU was typically about $10-$15 less, since there is no HSF and less packaging. Shipping is usually less, also, since the HSF is by far the bulk of the weight and volume. Perhaps things have changed, and my "expectations" have yet to catch up with present conditions, but there is no real justification to charge the same or more for less product with less warranty.
