Hi all,
I'm re-seating the reference cooler baseplate for a 5850, but it's been done enough times where the squishy thermal tape over the VRMs is too degraded/splattered for my comfort. The spongy thermal tape for the RAM chips is fine.
Any good suggestions for buying that kind of deformable thermal tape?
As an aside, am I stupid to think that the squishable/deformable VRM thermal tape has better thermal performance than the spongy resilient RAM thermal tape? Anyone know the difference in specs on the two different kinds of thermal tape? I'm thinking I could actually excise a portion of the unused RAM spongy thermal tape and use it to patchwork cover each VRM, but I'm worried that it's performance is just not as good as getting the squishable/deformable tape.
Note that if I try to pry up the old VRM thermal tape, it comes off in crumbly pieces, behaving almost as if it's a perfect rectangle of dried out cheapo paste disguised as thermal tape.
I've found a few sources of thermal tape, but I think it's only the spongy type or I have no way to know. Sometimes the thermal performance is quantified, but I can't tell if it's going to meet the needs of the VRMs.
