Source / Steam games online - hang / freeze / lag

This is not the popular hl2 freezing/stuttering issue;

While playing HL2 mods online (+ other online steam games?, cant recall, will test when i get home), every 45sec/minute or so I will get what looks like server lag where everyone freezes, but I can still move around (until I warp back to my true position when it catches up). This hang lasts maybe 2 seconds.

If I'm carrying something in game (box, barrel) and the hang occurs, the item gets dropped and I must pick it up again.

I do not have a problem with any other online games I play.

Thanks.

I encountered something in DoD recently. IIRC it's a bad map issue, something has been corrupted. Try redownloading the map you're playing. That cleared it up for me. But it did make me go nuts, because at first I thought it was a network issue.

Unfortunately its not that;

My issue happens in multiple games (zombie master, insurgency) on every server / map.

Are you using WIFI? Do you have a bluetooth adapter searching for signals? Sometimes small little quirky things will do this.

Do the games lag when you turn Steam off?

Start a game, Alt-Tab back to Steam to turn it off, and give that a try.

This sounds pretty similar to what happens to me while playing Counter Strike Source, every minute or so it happens to me, but i think it is because of my internet, I use a wireless linksys thing to connect to the router in the other room.

Its definitly something steam related; I fired up red orchestra and it did something similar.

I used skype while playing a hl2 mod last night, and each time the game hung (hanged?), my skype would cut out.

Its almost as if the bandwidth is getting completely choked.

This problem started happening only recently, but I hadn't used steam for a fairly long time.

Again, no issues whatsoever in any other online game.

Isnt Red Orchestra a UT mod? Wouldnt the "doing something similar" (the hanging up) in that game lead you to believe it has something to do with your connection and not steam?

If your still convinced its steam, close it down and run Red Orchestra again and see what happens.

Course I might have read your post wrong...

RO is indeed a UT mod; Run through steam. Being a steam app, I have to have steam running while playing it.

My guess is that steam is periodicly choking my bandwidth. Could be a port issue or something with the router, but in the past my steam games have played online fine with the same hardware setup I have now. I just noticed this problem when I started using steam again.

Playing steam games offline yields no problems. Steam games online, have a problem. Non-steam games on/off-line have no problem.

Doesn't that point to steam?

I also had stuttering issues with CS:S, BF2 and BF2142. Turns out superfetch caused memory leaks while running these games. If youre running Vista try disabling the service, it's like night and day for me. Smooth as silk now.
