first of here is my rig:

Intel C2D E6600
BFG 8800GTS 640MB OC2
Asus P5B-Deluxe/WiFi
Corsair XMS2 2GB DDR2
WD 75GB HD
WD 250GB HD
Antec NeoHE 500W
NEC DVD Player w/ Lightscribe
Samsung 215TW
cREATIVE sOUNDBLASTER aUDIGY 4
Antec P180B
Windows XP Home SP2

the problem:

my computer fails to start up. every now and then, though more and more often now my comp fails to start up after i press the power button. i getr a slight whirl of the fans starting, or not all, a blink of the front led before it powers down. i then do all manner or plug unplug, leave the power unplugged for 5 mins, 10 mins, 30 mins, overnight and sometimes it still wont power up. i just managed to get it sarted today after 4 attempts of plug/unplug after it had been unplugged the whole evening.

my first incling is that i got a problem with my PSU, but i have seen lotsa people run a similar rig of better with a PSU similar to mine so i thinking that might not be it.

i dont overclock at all so i dont think i got a problem with the mobo and all the other components work fin once the computer does want to start.

does anyone have any suggestions? if it is the PSU (which i suspect) then i will buy a new one (which one is good?) or if it si soemthing else could someone let me know. any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the Forums :) The PSU seems like one of the most likely culprits. I heard good things about the Corsair PSUs if you want to take a gamble that it's the PSU.

this is really odd, still having my problems with my comp. went to my local comp shop and they said most likely it sounds like an issue with the PSU.

but anyway, i find if i open the antec p180 then plug it all up and everything i powers on ok, well, at least the success rate of powering up is greatly increased over when it is closed. this is really odd...

That tends to indicate a heat issue, but it doesn't indicate it with your original post.

Still, if it works, don't knock it.
Keep the side off for the time being.

i dont think it is a heat issue. the weather has been pretty cool in london and i keep my comp in the cold room in the house and my problems sometimes happen in the morning after the comp has been off for hours.

i guess for now it is not so much of an issue, but we will see. just really odd...

I'm about 60 miles South of you then.

It does sound like the psu, except that when the case is off, the problem goes away.
Have you got the fans in your case facing the right way?

i have on fan blowing in, two blowing out, the cpu fan facing out. all is correct.

it is currently on a good run where it turns on no problem first time, but soon enough i know it will revert back to the craziness decribed before.
