Awww was hoping for a dial up modem. I use it as an example in one of my classes and I always get blank stares :(

I am intimately familiar with all of those. When I was a child our phone number was only four digits and a party line.

The sound of pulling the knob, the ka-thunk, and the soft drop of a pack of cigarettes dropping from a vending machine.

The door closing on a telephone booth.

The sigh of satisfaction after giving a hard day's work.

I think its a bit more than kids, excluding "hipsters", that haven't heard any of those sounds outside of tv or internet.

Many of those are STILL around in daily use in 'Merica. Whoever wrote that article needs to get out of his Cali office and see the country.

In other news, a sound that kids all around the country hear daily that actually has some significance: "I'm filing for divorce."

I'm 27.

1. Yes, and have used a rotary phone before.
2. Yes, and have used a typewriter before.
3. Nope.
4. No. Lol, single-use flash bulbs.
5. Yes, The earliest TV I can remember using had no remote and used dials. My grandparents' dial TV that we used every time we visited was used well into the 2000s.
6. Yes, heard/seen it in some restaurant jukeboxes.
7. Nope, never used full-service gas stations outside of New Jersey.
8. Yes, remember those signoffs from my childhood in the 90s on some channels.
9. Yes, a few mom-and-pop drug stores near my high school used them.
10. Yes, tons of films in elementary school were shown on projectors.

Well, I must be old then.
The sound of pulling the knob, the ka-thunk, and the soft drop of a pack of cigarettes dropping from a vending machine.

The door closing on a telephone booth.

The sigh of satisfaction after giving a hard day's work.
lololol

My 14 yo is going to work the rest of the week with a landscaper friend doing grunt work. I told that he would earn some $$ and it would inspire him to keep his grades up.

The wooden ones had a distinctly different sound than the metal booths...and the wood ones tended to have a seat in them, too.

Those old dark wooden ones were almost lounges. They had a seat and a place to write and a fan that activated when the door closed.

I know all of these sounds. The flash cubes were odd, but i went through many of them. I was so amazed at the camera after that. Flash bulb that never needed to be replaced. Only changed cameras because the film for the other one was hard to find locally. I went through a few of the other cameras following that one and they all sucked. finally upgraded to a 35mm slr when one of the cheapys ate a roll of film on a NY trip. My slr still holds up and works. had to adjust the reflex mirror once. (don't leave them, or anything, in a hot car for long) Now i have a dslr. i regret not getting a full frame one. when i have money, thats something i'm going to upgrade.

i learned to type on a manual typewriter

The percolator is something i haven't heard in a long time though.

I used to work at a full service gas station in the late 90s

The local movie theater still uses film strip projectors. They're taking donations to convert, but it's not going well.

I'm kind of surprised they don't have the old manual credit card imprinters on that list. They made a very distinct sound when you ran them over a card to process a transaction.

The swoosh swoosh swoosh of a hand cranked ditto machine. Surprised we all don't have brain cancer.

Remember the sounds tape recorders would make when you pressed both the Play and Record buttons at the same time? Or putting a tape in and closing the compartment door?

Remember the sound and smell of cap guns?

I don't know about sounds, but it does seem like a lot of the children today have never heard the word "no".
