I have a SB Live! Value and for a while now I have been experiencing crackling sounds when the processor/disk usage is too high. This happens even when I'm listening to audio CD's. I tried driver rollback until I reached XP's first driver for the card, but the problem still persists. Anyone has a clue on what should I look for problems/errors that are causing this?

<< Do you have a RAID card? >>

Yes and no. I have a RAID controller in the MoBo (ASUS A7V133). But I don't use the RAID feature, I have a HDD connected to the ATA100 port, and other 2 CD drives connectet to the normal IDE ports. Btw, I don't know if that's related or not, XP quited detecting my CD drives as UDMA2 and Multiword DMA2 and now sets them as PIO mode. I tried using Via's miniport driver and although it correctly found my CD's as DMA, the sound problem persisted. I uninstalled the miniport driver now.

I had your exact same problem with sound. It turned out that my Highpoint driver (both native XP and the latest from highpoint) was causing it. Only using Iwill's latest driver cleared it up. But I have an Iwill SideRAID 100 PCI RAID card. Still, you might want to look into the RAID feature anyhow. Maybe remove the devices from that RAID ports and disable in in hardware and see if it still happens.

I reinstalled the RAID drivers, but it didn't touch the problem. I don't know if this is related or not, but sometimes DEVLDR hangs when I'm logging off or shutting down the computer. Since I installed Creative's drivers for the card the problem hasn't showed up yet, though.

Update: Just set the BIOS settings to default values, didn't change a thing though.
