Soundmax or PSU problem?

I know you guys just handled a problem like this a few days ago, but my problem is not quite the same. All of a sudden staring today, my computer will crash and restart, the windows diagnosis says that it was caused by the smwdm.sys program: soundmax. I have uninstalled the soundmax file, and installed an updated file from the soundmax website. So far, for 10 minutes, it has been ok. I wanted to post this because I feel that the problem is going to persist.

-Edit- Yeah its still crashing...

My specs:
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ processor
512 mb RAM
Geforce FX 5600 video card
A7v600 Motherboard
I have a 350 Watt power supply

I am praying it is not a power supply problem, I have just recently bought an x800 xt video card, and is getting shipped to my home now. If my computer is having problems with power now, I hate to think of the problems with an x800 plugged in
Also, a my computer just crashed while I was entering the recycling bin. Now why would soundmax start up then? This makes me think that maybe my PSU is dieing.

Please help!

You sound like you know your way around, so I presume you have eliminated spy ,ad, and virus issues, and checked to be certain there are no heat related problems too, correct? You can run memtest86+ to be certain the ram isn't going flakey but beyomd that the PSU bonking is definitely one of the prime suspects. If it's a generic psu then moving up to a quality one would be advisable. The PSU is the heart of the system so a strong heart is worth the expense regardless IMHO :)

Power supplies are a commonly blamed culprit here for some reason, but it sounds like you've already got the solution - the sound driver. If you uninstall the sound driver AND turn off the sound 'card' in your BIOS, does the problem persist? If not, you've found the problem - the sound card drivers / the sound card. If you have any memory dumps in c:\windows\minidump at the time in question, follow the information in my .sig and I'll take a look at the dump - perhaps I'll see something in there.

But I think you've got your answer already. :) Give it a shot.

Thanks for your posts, I updated Windows and my computer has been stable for 24 hours, so I think the problem was fixed.

Thanks again
