having searched this forum and others for a solution to the lack of device drivers for Soundmax onboard audio devices, i found the following solution to work. i am crediting a post on the Windows Seven Forums website and hope it will be of use to someone. the thread can be viewed here:

about half way down is a post from gxdata, this method worked for me.
my motherboard is a P4C800 Deluxe with AD1988 sound. i have not tested all the features of the soundmax software to see if it all works, but i have clear audio for music playback and tv audio from my tuner card, which is all i need. i can make no other representations.
