I tried fixing this myself, but when I finally hit a dead end I figured it's time to find help. I just sent the following message to adi and hp, but figured I'd try here as well, maybe someone here is familiar with this problem or knows somebody with the same system- Atech's been very helpful to me in the not-so-distant past on fixing pc problems. Anyway, here goes:
I own a compaq 1210JP notebook computer with SoundMax AC97 Integrated Digital Audio Driver, and I am using Windows 2000 Pro SP4 w/ DirectX 9.0c. The windows 2000 drivers are available on the following page:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/prev...product=94957#cc=us#softwareitem=36849
with the newest driver being 5.12.01.3027 A
I have installed this latest driver but I am having trouble in that wav-output randomly does not output any sound upon booting into windows 2000 (i.e. sometimes when I boot into windows the wav output will work perfectly throughout, but the next time I boot into windows the wav-output is silent from both laptop speakers and headphones, such as no system sounds, and no music from winamp or windows media player). I have confirmed it is not an issue with the volume being set too low or muted in the sound mixer. And for your information, I can hear the audio from cd's and system beeps even if the wav-output doesn't work. If I try to play a wav or mp3 file in winamp or windows media player, it appears to play the file and the visualizations or spectrum analysis can be seen, but in fact the audio cannot be heard. I would also like to point out that there are no abnormalities in device manager. I tried turning off the sound hardware acceleration and rebooting but it had no effect.
I would also like to mention that 5.12.01.3027 A is the first sound driver I installed on a fresh install of windows 2000. When the wav-ouput problems occured, I used the uninstall utility, and tried using the older versions of the driver available on the hp/compaq page. But the audio played too fast. I did read the faq:
http://forms.analog.com/Form_Pages/soundMax/soundMaxSupportFAQ.html#question2
about fast playback means the wrong version of the driver was installed, or the native OS driver was being used. I can assure you, Windows 2000 has no native driver that detects this sound hardware, and I am quite sure my notebook is the 1210JP model (Compaq Diagnostic Software for Windows (3.10 A) and the sticker on the bottom of my system both identify this laptop as being the 1210JP).
Since then, I have uninstalled the old version drivers and have resumed using 5.12.01.3027 A. But I still have the same problem with wav-ouput not functioning at random. I would very much appreciate a solution to this problem.
