Well im in the market for a few different peripherals right now, mainly a printer, speakers and soundcard. Im truely clueless....

I am moving to a smaller room and need to get rid of my tower speakers and reciever for next year. So I was thinking about selling htem and getting a PC 5.1 set of something. I dont really have any idea what to get. In terms of sound cards I am using my motherboard onboard sound.

I think I was going to get something newer. I really play very few games and just want a 5.1 capable system. As far as I understand the dolby digital decoding can be done either through the speakers or through the computer/soundcard.

I am running a barton 2500+ at 2.3 right now with a gig of ram, so the system can decode. I dont even know if the system or the soundcard does the decoding.

Basically, what I was thinking right now was an Audigy 2 ZS or maybe even something less... recomendations? Something that only really lets me play DVDs in surround sound is really what I need. I was thinking even a soundblast live 5.1? Just need the bare minimum unless there is a reason to go to a more expensive card or a 7.1 setup.

I also need a set of speakers. I think the exact set I need to get depends more on budget and soundcard selection. I listen to a fair bit of music and dont mine spending $200ish on speakers.

If I were to save money it would be on the soundcard to be the very basic 5.1 soundcard. Something that interested me while I was browsing was the wireless remote that came with a lot of the creative speaker sets. Again if I were going to save money it ideally wouldnt be on the speakers.

Finally, I also need a new printer. I have a laser printer now for papers and stuff like that, but I want to get a photo printer. I have a 5 megapixel sony camera, DSC-F717 and a smaller 2 megapixel. I want to be able to print on DVDs and CDs as I make a lot of my own stuff.

I was looking at dye sub printers but more at the less costly per print inkjets. What really interested me was the epson r200 and r300 because of the part that lets your print directly onto DVD/CD printable media. The largest I will ever want to print is 8x10 and very rarely that large.

I was also interested in the borderless printing options offered by the epsons. Maybe other brands have the same features.

Budget here ideally under $200. The epson r200 I saw for around $100.

If you made it this far, thank you very much for reading. All input suggestions greatly appreciated as I am truely a newbie.

The Audigy ZS would be a good choice..

IMO, the Santa Cruz is still a great card for the money.

R300 is the way to go hands down. Smaller dropplet sizes than the beloved Canon i860. Higher Resolution. and has more features..

At least it doesn't use PictBrige.

Your logic for pairing a $200 speaker set to a cheap SBLive 5.1 card doesnt work.
Also for real time music listening the Sound Card does teh decoding and that is what takes away the CPu cycles (so Audigy 2 is the best for that)

if you don't want to break the bank:

On Pricewatch.com:

Audigy 2 6.1 $67
Logitech Z5300 5.1 THX 280 Watts $149
Canon i860 $134

If you want to step it up a little:

Audigy 2 7.1 ZS
Creative Labs MegaWorks 5.1 THX 550 Watts $204
Canon i960 $179 - This bad boy only takes 1 minute to print 8x10 photo!

I wasnt too sure if these are the best printers for photo but they seem to be good all around printers from what i've read. The R300 could be better like the user above said but I don't know much about it.

And last thing I am not sure if Creative is able to play DVD Audio discs yet properly with the software that it shifts. hmm.....maybe someone will clarify that and tell you what program to download for 5.1 listening. It is a beauty for DVD movies though.

Be aware that unless you print color every day the chance of clogs is quite high with the Epsons. And the ability to use 3rd party ink tanks or refill kits, etc. is not certain. I like Canon, but I don't think there are any out there that can print on CDs.

So the logitech z5300s dont do the 5.1 decoding? It happens with teh soundcard right? Why would you guys all suggest canons over epsons? If I wanted to print printable media how would I print on a canon?

I don't think 5300s do because they would cost a lot more. Logitech Z680s have it though. But frankly I dont get the reason why when the sound card does all the work for sound...maybe someone can explain that better. Why don't you go to a computer store and listen to Z5300, Z560 (if they have it), MegaWorks 550 and then you can easily decide what you like.

You can print everything on canon that a epson can print, except I am not sure if you can directly print the "cover" onto a cd like you mentioned you wanted epson to do. Again you can drop by a store and chck out the quality of each and then you can be certain without having to question our preferences.
