Hi all.....

Has anyone connected their CD-Rom/DVD to a soundcard using an "digital" PDIF cable?

If so, is there a noticable difference in sound Quality?

The card is a 5.1 Live Surround, they will be using 5300 EAX/Dolby Surround speakers.....

O.S. will be Win 2k Pro

Thx

I've wondered this as well. I have onboard sound so it didnt come with an audio cable, but a store told me that those digital audio cables arent sold in retail channels. Thats odd. In any case, my motherboard has a 4-pin CD audio slot so I dont think it will accept anything but analog cables. Of course, I'm assuming that the 2-pin digital audio cable also has a 2-pin connector for the motherboard/soundcard end.

you don't really need a cable with win2k.
look under properties of the drive in device manager & under properties check enable cd audio......

I have a Audigy that is hooked up to both the 2pin and the 4pin and I myself believe the 4pin connection to sound better... Which also happens to be the Audigy's stock setting.

I thought it just does the digital over the IDE channel if you don't have the 2-pin, in which case... what is the point of the 2-pin?

lol, this seems conclusive then, stick with the stock cable and don't buy a digital one!

if anyone can expand on the views of others then feel free....

by the way, I made a typing error in my post!

"using an "digital" PDIF cable?"

was obviously

"using a" !

Thx all

If you have WinMe/2k/XP you don't need ANY audio cable, digital or analog to get digital audio :D

Get into Device Manager, look at the Properties for your CD-ROM drive (double click on it) and then goto the Properties tab. Towards the bottom you'll see a check box labeled "Enable Digital CD Audio for this CD-ROM device" Check it and reboot.

From now on DAE will be used to play any AudioCD tracks in ANY application. You can unplug all the cables going to your CD-ROM, except for the IDE cable of course.....

WinXP does this by default. Me/2k do not.
