Soundcard Reviews Question

Does anybody know where there's a place that has some comprehensive reviews of soundcards? Unfortunately Anandtech's latest reviews are quite old, and I'm wondering where there's some reviews out there that do comparisons of many brands.

And in addition to that, what's the state of on-board sound on high-end motherboards? Good enough for games, or completely incompatable and inadequate for 3D sound? (I'm talking like Oblivion, and the like)

Thanks.

It's hard to benchmark sound. It's subjective really. On-board sound usually won't support the EAX HD effects like Creative soundblaster cards do.

If you don't want to go creative you can look into m-audio. Mainly a musicians recording card, not the greatest for gaming or EAX.
Not many choices for quality soundcards out there, kind of like microsoft and windows 🙂

well they used to review them more back when there was a real battle between aureal and creative for 3d sound supremacy. now that aureal is dead and progress has stagnated there isn't much point i ugess. i used to read 3dsoundsurge.com but they stopped having much to update that i cared about years ago.

Sound cards are hard to review because, as stated, the sound is mostly subjective. Also, it all depends on the type of system you're going to hook up to the card.

The best resource for getting a recommendation on a sound card would probably Head-Fi forums, in the Computers-As-Source forum. Most of the users there are very knowledgeable and will definitely get you your money's worth.
