OK so I am thinking about upgrading from onboard sound. My computer is used for mild gaming (CS:S and I occasionally play other games on a rotating basis like NFS: Most Wanted) and music listening. What's my best bet:
1. Chaintech AV-710
2. M-Audio's 5.1 Card
3. Something from Creative like the X-fi that was $75 @CC recently?

Also, I only intend to use 2.1 speakers or headphones. The quality of sound output is very important to me for music, but at the same time I want a card that will be compatible with games. I should also note that I'd like to stay around $100. Thanks for your input.

With $100 to work with, an X-Fi would be at the top of my list for a gaming/music card.

Especially if you're using headphones for gaming, an X-Fi would be a good bet.

On different budget levels, yeah Chaintech for music and will work for games... for a midrange, an Audigy2 zs for $40 after rebate is a nice deal.

For gaming and music, I'd probably go with either the A2 or an X-Fi that was on sale.
