soundcard, headphones and distortion

i have a guillemot maxisound fortissimo soundcard. the card has some kickass 2d sound, decent 3d sound, GREAT optical output and 4 speaker capabilites.

when i connect my Sony PC speakers to the card (with subwoofer) i can crank up the volume on the computer and the sub as i please w/o hitting any distortion until the concrete on the walls start rattling a bit. with my headphones however, i have to crank winamp halfway down - and even then there is still distortion depending on what i'm listening to (no distortion when listening to Bach, but lots when listening to Modest Mouse).

the headphones on anyother system - my portable cdplayer or even the earbud plug on the front of the CD-ROM doesn't produce any distortion. what is the soundcard doing that causes such distortion and is there any way to fix it?

i upgraded this card from a Creative Labs AudioPCI - i dont remember if it had the same problem. any help would be great

This is just a guess..... ok? 😛

Could your speakers have a filter built into it that would take that distortion out?

Good Luck,
Wolf
