In order to upgrade to Vista, I had to say goodbye to my 8+ year old SBLive 5.1. That card earned its $30 sticker price and then some.
I strayed hard away from Creative, hearing of many problems with Vista.
I first got an Auzentech Xplosion based on a CMedia chipset, and it sounded awesome (and worked awesome in Vista), with one small problem: the mic input volume was ridiculously low (about half of what it was with my SBLive).
So I RMA'd that and got a bgears B-enspirer (based on a similar CMedia chipset) and ran into exactly the same problem. Even my crappy on-board Realtek audio (shudder) has a mic input with about 3x the volume of the cards I've been through now.
The mic volume on both of these cards was simply too low for gaming.
So now I'm down to my final choices... try one of the new ASUS Xonars... or believe that the x-Fi's newest drivers will work with Vista and go back to Creative.
Any recommendations? Specifically firsthand experience with gaming and MIC input levels.
