Soundblaster Audigy Platinum -- Can't install Audigy Drive

I just got a Soundblaster Audigy Platinum for my son. I'm having an incredibly annoying problem installing it in my Dell Optiplex GX1P.

The platinum has an external Audigy drive that you install in a 5.25" slot. You can then plug microphones, musical instruments, etc. into it.

I've installed various other 5.25" devices into Dell's, e..g internal tape drives, CDRW drives, etc. Dell has these mounting brackets, and you screw the device into the bottom of the mounting brackets. This has always worked fine.

The stupid Audigy, however, is supposed to be screwed in on its side, not its bottom. The are no screwholes in the bottom of the Audigy drive. The Dell mounting brakcet has no way you can screw things in on the side, you have to screw in on the bottom.

I find it incredibly annoying that either (a) Soundblaster can't include 4 little holes at the bottom of its drive so it can be mounted in a Dell, and (b) that Dell doesn't have any way of screwing things in from the side.

Am I doomed? Am I going to have to pay $40 more to get an Audiby Platinum Ex with an external Audigy drive? Or is there some cheapie mounting bracket available in any store that will solve the problem?

It would be tempting to put the AUdigy drive in, without screws, and put some kind of padding around it so it didn't bounce around. I have a feeling I would regret that though.

Thanks for any help. Again, I can't believe that a $200 device has such a basic problem. RW

Well, you could always take out the Drive's electronics and make your own holes. I know it's something that most people would not want to do, but if you want to save $40, I think it'd be worth a try.

I don't have my drive out, but maybe Creative couldn't drill some there..maybe the electronics are too low/close to the bottom to do any screw-hole drilling?

Contacting Dell might not be a bad idea...however they might just say, "We won't give you support because we aren't/didn't install it." It never hurts to ask.

Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback guys. Dell wasn't much help. Luckily, I was able to return the drive with no hassle. I've ordered an Audigy Platinum EX (has an external version of the Audigy drive) from Buy.com. Even with high-speed shipping it is only about $30 more than what I was paying, would have been less if I'd done my Christmas shopping a little earlier. Just hope the card itself will work ok. RW
