I noticed when I play certain games like UT the sound is super scratchy, almost like if I had a loose connection. If I play music or anything else it sounds fine. In fact I noticed it in the new UO client which plays the exact same tunes as the old client, and it's scratchy in the new client but not the old. What would cause this? Sounds like it's specific to graphic intense games, the old UO client has very basic clients while the new has better graphics... would not call it exactly intense though.

Well, if you have a sound card lying around (lol) try popping it in and seeing if it goes away. If not, I'd try reducing the sampling rate, and see if that helps.

No spare card, but I'll see what else I can do. Might be worth buying one, don't think they're all that expensive and I might get a good deal after Christmas.

Onboard sound doesn't always hold up very well when the load is intense. Just not enough bandwidth or cpu cycles to go around and/or the drivers aren't always so good. Many will tell you that what I am about to say isn't true but they are wrong. Quality discrete sound cards are still far superior to onboard audio. By quality I don't mean Soundblaster either. Quality means hardware and drivers. if you don't have both then you don't have quality.
