The sound is also quiet driving sound when watching the video feed through my ATI HDTV wonder card.

I have looked at the volume control settings and the

volume control, wave, SW synth, CD player settings and line in are all at the max.

Any ideas???

Have you put the volume all the way up on the powerdvd software itself? its a little hard to find where the volume is... but i also had this issue and fixed it that simply.

In PowerDVD, click on Configuration.
- Audio tab
- Advanced button
- Miscellaneous tab
- Set the button for Noisy Environment

This should boost the sound considerably.

You can probably blame the wide dynamic range of movie soundtracks, where quiet sounds are really quiet, and loud sounds are really loud.

My first DVD ever was The Matrix, and I was close to never buying another DVD again; the sound balance on that was awful in my opinion. Accurate maybe, but I don't need that for movie-watching. Speech was almost inaudible, and explosions sounded like they were right there in the room. I can SEE the explosion; I don't need the entire room to get blown apart by the speakers. Subtitles make the movie watchable. That, or maybe I'll have to rip the movie to the hard drive, use Goldwave to normalize and tweak the sound, then rerender it and put it back on a DVD.
Ok, ranting is over. For now.

Common problem with PC stereo speakers or others lacking either full dynamic range and/or multi-channel. As Jeff7 suggested, the range can be compressed but also don't select an audio track with more channels than the system is capable of, when given the option, since a 2.0 Surround engineered track or such is obviously better than downmixing.

i hate that too, when the dialogue is too quiet and the explosions are too loud, i wind up having to switch to a different dolby mode or whatever, live theatre on my receiver seems to make things sound semi-balanced.

Something that I was wondering about PowerDVD is why is there no option for 5.1 sound? I am only able to select stereo. Seems to be a pretty large omission considering how may people are using 5.1 audio these days.

Yeah, it came with my Lite-On drive so you're prolly right. Seems like a pretty decent player though, what's the price for the full version? Is it worth it?

If so, and if the full version supports 5.1 sound I might just fork over the $ and upgrade to full vs.
