Sound trouble with Dell 4100

Hi All,
My father-in-law has a Dell 4100 (933mhz P3; 128 SDRAM; ATI 128 RAGE pro 32meg; unknown motherboard).
His mouse wasn't working so I reinstalled the drivers. Still no luck, so I reinstalled Win ME. No good. I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them (a real pain without a mouse). The thing is that it worked in safemode, but not during a normal boot up. Eventually I got the mouse working, but then discovered that the sound wasn't working. I did the same thing, reinstalling and uninstalling the drivers multiple times. They would install, supposedly, fine; but they couldn't play anything. I started getting messages that there was no soundcard in the computer. I forget the name of the card--Analogue something. The card is on-board the motherboard. NOt sure what model the MB is either.

Anyway, I'm at a complete loss. Those Dell support guys were useless when it came to the mouse, so my father-in-law is reluctant to call them again.

Any suggestions?

Aren't you still under warranty? - send it back.

If not, go to Dell's support pages. They have all the drivers and can identify your MB from the service tag. Finally, the CD that came with your Dell should be able to automatically identify what drivers you need.

Personally, I'd dump WinMe and install a "real" O/S from a fresh install.

Good luck!

Installing the right drivers is no problem: I've installed them at least 8 times. The problem is that after I install them, nothing happens. I reboot, and try to play a sound file, and... nothing. WMP says that the hardware is not installed or is not working. The light on the sound card is on. Sometimes I get a message saying that I have a problem with my System.ini file, or the registry. But shouldn't installing the driver fix these problems?
The mouse was just as problematic, but at least it eventually worked.
