Sound through aux amp?

Can computer sound be routed through an auxiliary amp, like the sound from a TV? Before I head to radio shack for a spool of speaker wire, I'd like to know if it will work.

Hope this helps - I wrote it a while back (if not, check with R/Shack - I've found them very helpful):

Connecting Your PC?s Sound Card to Your Stereo System:

Before connecting audio devices together it is a good idea to first review the manuals for your PC or its sound card and your stereo system or speakers. Also look at the audio jacks on the devices to see what type they are. Some inexpensive sound cards may have only a Speaker jack, which provides an amplified but poor quality audio signal, that can be connected directly to unamplified speakers. However, most sound cards will have at least one Line Out jack for external connections. The Line Out jack provides a high quality but unamplified audio signal that may be connected to an amplifier or to speakers containing their own amplifiers (which usually is indicated by the speakers having to be connected to an electrical outlet). Assuming you have the latter type of card, you may proceed as follows:

1. At Radio Shack or other source get a good quality stereo cable adapter with a 1/8" mini stereo plug on one end and splitting into two RCA phono plugs (usually labeled L/R) at the other end. You may need more than one of these, or you may need extension cables, depending on your system and its layout (see 5 below).

2. When installing cables, first turn the power off for all gear until you are certain the connections are correct.

3. Plug the 1/8" mini stereo plug of the adapter into the Line Out or Line Out 1 jack of the sound card.

4. Connect the RCA plugs at the other end of the adapter into the CD input of your stereo (observing Left & Right orientation).

5. If at your stereo system you have 2 channel input (Left and Right), you should connect the Line Out jack from the PC?s sound card to your stereo system using a single stereo cable adapter that splits into RCA Right and Left conneectors, as described above. If you have 4-channel input on your stereo, you should connect the Line 1 Out jack (?front? sounds) and Line 2 Out jack (?rear? sounds) on the PC?s sound card (if your sound card is so equipped) to your stereo using two separate cables that split into RCA Right and Left. If your stereo has 6-channel input, connect the cables the same as for 4-channel, but leave the Center Left and Center Right channels unused (they will be rendered through the front speakers).
