Sound skipping in XP

I recently got an AthlonXP 1600+ and did a fresh install of WinXP. I've noticed that since then, when I'm playing MP3s and I run a program, the sound will start skipping as if the processor weren't fast enough to handle it. This never happened before on my P3 750 mhz unless I started several programs at once; now, it does it even with IE or PuTTY.

Is this something that just happens with AMD, or is there something I can do to fix this? I've installed Creative drivers for it (SB Live) with no luck.

Another thing is that sometimes it takes a long time to restore windows like Microsoft Word after I minimize it and don't use it for a while. Are there any tweaks that could help get better performance?

Specs:
AthlonXP 1600+
EPoX 8KHA+
2x256MB Crucial PC2100
SB Live MP3+
Asus Geforce2MX
Maxtor 7200RPM 40 gb + 5400RPM 30 gb
Toshiba 16x DVDRom
Yamaha 8x4x24 CDRW
2 10/100 NICs
Windows XP

Thanks, mike.

<< update your Live drivers for your sound card and your Via 4n1's >>

Is that just a general suggestion?

I've updated both, with no luck. I think I noted that I installed the Live drivers for XP and it didn't help. I had been using the WDM drivers until a few weeks ago when creative finally released the drivers. As for the 4 in 1's, I installed them but it didn't do much. I'll try again, though, but I'd like to know if this is actually a fix that you found for a similar problem or if its the knee-jerk reaction "update your drivers".
