Yeah, I know. I originally planned on going into bestbuy to buy a 10-20 dollar set of headphones, but got side-tracked by all the bling around me.

In most cases the D/A conversion at the sound card is the better, and more high quality, option.

In addition to what PurdueRY points out, the conventional audio plug can be used else where - i.e., your MP3 player, your home entertainment system, TV, etc., etc. The USB connector is only useful on a computer.

As for what you hear in the headphones, the quality of sound depends more on the quality of the headphones than anything else.
