Sound proofing...

I'm looking for a way to sound proof one of my rooms, for an entertainment center type thing. What do people use to do this? I was thinking of putting together some panels covered with just carpet, seems that would work pretty well. Does anyone else have any ideas?

apparently there's a strip that you can put in a doorway (the doorframe) which serves as a soundproofing agent. also, i think it's a good idea to contact some of your local hardware stores and see if there's an insulation material that would work better than carpet.

People use all sorts of crap, and some of it is useless.
Materials are rated with a sound absorption coefficent, 1 being perfect absorbtion.
Of course, materials are more and less absorbant at different frequencies.
In short, nothing you can obtain for you house will absorb much below 250hz.
The best matrial for you is, rockwool, sometimes called mineral fiber, or Owens Corning type 700 insulation.
I forget the exact naming convention, but basically 703 is 3" thick. 702 is 2" thick.
Typically people cover this stuff with fabric because it looks better and protects you from the itchy material.
Obviously, you have to cover it with fabric which lets the sound through, otherwise, the fabric will reflect the sound. Imagine covering a sponge with plastic wrap. got it?

So, what fabric do people use?
The top of the line is made by guilford of maine.
If you want somethign less expensive, try to get swimsuit fabric.

The really expensive pre-made panels you will find are Owens Corning type 700 fiberglass covered with Guilford of Maine material.

Studio foam...oh my god that is expensive. Definently not going to be using any of that.

Glen, where would I look to purchase any of that stuff? And any guesses on pricing? I'm looking to spend maybe $5-600 heh, I don't know how far that's going to get me, but there's got to be something I can do for that much that's going to be better than painted drywall.

I think that one of my brother's friend's used regular diamond shaped foam. It's the stuff that you see for camping mats sometimes. I'm not sure how good it would work though

that foam doesn't soundproof a room..it deadens the room so there's no more echos...

Glen, where would I look to purchase any of that stuff?
Fabric - look up Gilford of Maine and try local fabric stores.

Insulation - call local commercial/industrial insulation supply places. Ask for mineral fiber, rockwool, and Owens Corning type 700 series fiberglass.
