Sound Proofing Apartment

I am in the process of building an apartment in my basement and I am looking into sound proffing material. I have been reading online and there is so much information. I am looking for a decent solution from some one who has actually done this themselves. Can anyone offer advice/suggestions?

A layer of sheetrock across your ceiling will go a long way w/ sound proofing and doesn't cost much alocurto 🙂

Buy some Dynamat (like for car audio installations) or buy those sound dampening foam squares used for audio recording rooms.

if you use good roled insulation between the beams then 1 (or maybe even 2 layers) of sheetrick (drywall), that would make it reasonably soundproofed at a low cost.

Buy the foamboard insulation, we used that for a similiar situation in our basement. It cut down heavy bass and won't cost as much as dynamat.

You can create a recording studio if you'd like too!

I've seen those strips that move the drywall off the studs and people also use a double layer of drywall along with insulation. I would think the strips that keep the drywall off the studs would work pretty good because it breaks up how sound travels.

Perhaps you should give us a budget and an idea of how much expertise you would have in the matter? And exactly how soundproof are you going for? No one to hear the screams of a woman as you...knife her? :Q

if you've got moderately loud noises coming in, you'll want place a 1/2" thick, dense material all around the room. (Foams and other "sound absorbing" material really don't have a tremendous impact on the kinds of sounds that typically penetrate rooms.) If you have windows, you have an issue. Windows are a primary source of sound leakage.

If you're trying to keep sound in, the same rules apply. You can use carpet to dampen sound, but you'll still need a really dense substrate behind it to block noise leakage.

I plan on killing babies in my basement and I don't want to pester the people above...

The above unit has hard wood floors. There is the normal basement setup with support beams (8 inches) running along the basement ceiling. As of now I am putting 6 inch insulation in the ceiling and using half inch sheet rock screwed to the ceiling. I am not looking to get into anything too expensive, maybe a couple hundred. I just want to see if you guys have any suggestions while I have the ceiling open. Once it is all sheet rocked up there is no going back.
