Sound Problems...

My roommate is using a Compaq Presario and he can't seem to get sound through one of his speakers (the right one). First I thought it was the sound card since when we plugged two sets of headphones into the speaker jack all we got was sound not coming out of one speaker (stock model had PCI) so he took the plunge and got an Audigy. Installing the Audigy had some problems with ME, so he had to format and after backing up, lo and behold - the sound doesn't work in the right speaker again, and now all we get is static. Same result when plugging the headphone back into the headphone jack.

It isn't a software issue because he's formatted, and it certainly appears not to be the sound card because he switched cards and even switched PCI slots. I'm thinking it was speakers, but since the headphones which we plugged into the sound card are completely functional he and I are about convinced it's a motherboard issue - but this seems odd since a motherboard problem would affect more than sound, it seems, and even if the PCI slot was bad it would be solved once we switched slots. Any suggestions?

tried to fix the balance? Since you formatted that's probably not it, but maybe in the Volume Control the bar is all the way in one direction
