Sound Problems with win 2000

I just installed windows 2000 on my old pc which is a amd 266 mhz ibm aptiva... after installing windows my sound card was detected and showed up in device manager as working properly, however no volume control bar is showing up and when i go to the multimedia option in control panel im not able to choose a sound card even though one is present in device manager.. someone please tell what to do, by the way i used another sound card and the same problem occured with it....
