Sound problems with Serious Sam, Unreal Tournament, and Undying

When i try to play Serious Sam, all of the sounds coming from my left speaker are full of static, whereas if i unplug my left speaker and just use my right one, everything sounds fine. However, in UT or Undying, my sounds are screwed coming out of both speakers. I have eliminated the possiblility of faulty speakers (tried 3 dif. sets, and 2 pairs of headphones), i've tried 2 different sound cards, and the strange thing is i can listen to mp3s, wav or other sound files through windows and they sound crystal clear. I can also play older games like Quake or Worms 2 and the sound is fine. So, my question is, is there some decompressor or something that i need to install? I've reformatted my whole HD, and reinstalled everything, including drivers. I have tried every driver as well, so i'm pretty sure it's not a Sound card driver problems.

Another thing is that when i run a sound test thru direct x diagnostics, everything sounds fine until it gets to the hardware step. At that step i can hear the sound, but there is an odd ripping sound above the sound effects. Hard to explain, but again, i've ruled out the possibility of a hardware problem, so it seems it would have to be something on the software level. Any help will be greatly appreciated, i've tried everything i know of.

My system:

900Mhz T-bird
MSI K7T Pro with VIA KT133 chipset
128MB Ram
I/O Magic MagicSound PCI
ASUS V7700 Geforce 2 GTS 64mb
Direct X 8.0a (tried 7 and 6 as well)

Have you tried reinstalling the soundcard software? Before doing that, go into the soundcard control program and reset everything. Most programs have a "reset all" or "reset to factory settings" button. Then, maybe try deleting the card from the Add/Remove Hardware list, and reinstalling from scratch?

Possibly, when you installed a game recently, it fuxored-up your soundcard software somehow....computers are freaky things, you know. Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestion, but i've already tried reinstalling my drivers, it hasn't helped. Remember, i reformatted my whole HD and started from scratch, but it didn't help at all. I can also test out my sound through the direct x diagnostics tool and everything sound fine. It's when i try to play newer games (serious sam, undying) that everything is all screwed up.

Sounds like your speaker is being overdriven, so check your volume control and see if the Wave\DirectSound slider is all the way to the top - if it is, bring it down about two or three notches.... Then check your games to see if the problem remains.
