sound problems when writing to firewire HD

I have an inspiron 8600 laptop with an Echo Indigo PCMCIA soundcard and the sound has clicks and beeps whenever I write to my firewire HD. Reading is fine... it's the writing that makes gives the sound problems. any idea what the problem could be?

Is the firewire through a pcmcia card also? Or is it built in?
