sound problems in XP- damn microsoft

I have a problem that just started a few days ago. Any time that I run an aplication my speakers start to cackle. This only happens while the app is loading, but its still really annoying. I am running windows XP and have been for a while now. The problem didn't exist for a month, but now all of a sudden it does. Interestingly, the only app that doesn't do this is Windows Media Player. Damn Microsoft. Oh well. Any suggestions on what the problem could be? How to fix it?😕
 
This has been a big problem lately. Almost knew you were going to say that. Check out the threads. There are tons on this issue. CAn't remember the exact answer we came up with since it's been awile.
